Email set up

To use email via the BlueBear servers, your email account has to be set up correctly. To ensure email traffic is as safe as possible, only secure connections are supported.

If you have set up email via BlueBear before without the use of a secure connection, it should be enough to only change the "secure/encrypted connection" setting followed by changing the "incoming/outgoing port number".

The precise configuration depends on your email software and the type of connection to use. Below you will find a general explanation.

Incoming email

There are two types of connections to collect incoming email, you should first find out which type you are meant to use for your account, before changing any settings.

POP3

  • Incoming mail server: mail.bluebear.nl
  • Secure/encrypted connection (TLS of SSL): yes
  • Incoming port number: 995 (set automatically in most cases after "secure connection" is selected)
  • Verification/login required: yes
  • User name: your complete email address (including the part after the @)
  • Password: your password

IMAP

  • Incoming mail server: mail.bluebear.nl
  • Secure/encrypted connection (TLS of SSL): yes
  • Incoming port number: 993 (set automatically in most cases after "secure connection" is selected)
  • Verification/login required: yes
  • User name: your complete email address (including the part after the @)
  • Password: your password

Outgoing email

To send outgoing email, there are also two options. You should first find out which you should use, before changing any settings.

SMTP via internet service provider

Settings for this connection differ per internet service provider. However, in most cases only the outgoing mail server needs to be set and you can send without user name and password, as long as you are directly connected to the internet service provider.

You can always find or confirm the settings with your internet service provider.
Often used outgoing mail servers in the Netherlands are:

  • KPN (also Simyo): smtp.kpnmail.nl
  • T-Mobile (also Ben and Simpel): smtp.gprs.t-mobile.nl
  • Telfort: smtp.telfortmail.nl
  • Vodafone: smtp.vodafone.nl
  • XS4All: smtp.xs4all.nl
  • Ziggo: smtp.ziggo.nl

SMTP via BlueBear

  • Outgoing mail server: mail.bluebear.nl
  • Secure/encrypted connection (STARTTLS1, TLS1 or SSL2): yes
  • Outgoing port number: 587 or 465 (set correctly automatically in most cases after the selection of "secure connection")
  • Verification/login required: yes
  • User name: your complete email address (including the part after the @)
  • Password: your password

1: "STARTTLS" en "TLS" in this context generally mean the same thing, and are then used through port number 587.
2: "SSL" in this context generally means an "SMTPS" connection, and is in that case used through port number 465.

Spam

Unlike most email service providers, we do not look at the contents of your emails to try and determine whether it is a spam message or not.

For our email services a system is used called Greylisting to filter spam and viruses. It relies on "real" email servers behaving according to the standards, while spam sending email servers hardly ever do.

This way a lot of unwanted email is caught, without a chance to accidentally filter good messages and and without scanning the contents of a message.

Of course this system doesn't catch everything either, but you are free to filter remaining unwanted emails in your own email software, while knowing who or what looks at the contents.

The only effect you as user could notice is that the first email contact between two addresses might be delayed by a few minutes.

See this page for a description about how Greylisting works.
